about

'The Saint of Saturday Night' is based on a story a female friend related to me about her night-clubbing days, when she would periodically run into a guy who hoped to pick up women using religion and a ‘messianic’ attitude as a come-on. (I didn’t ask if he showed up in a robe.)

It’s an instrumental in a monotonous 120 bpm dance tempo, but it gave me some room to have fun. I used a lot of stock disco and EDM synth samples, stereotypical hi-hat and octave bass patterns, and digital handclaps for that disco atmosphere. I also couldn’t resist inserting something really bizarre: quotes of two works by Igor Stravinsky, melodies from the Finale of ‘The Firebird’, and the opening melody of ‘Shrovetide Fair’ in the beginning of his “Petrouchka” ballet, the first stated as a theme, and the second played as counterpoint against it. Forgive me.
