about

Sometime very early in the COVID-19 pandemic lockdown, I awoke to absolute silence on the street. No bus, no traffic, no runners, no walkers - NOTHING…nothing but birds, and the sound of the wind and water. It was like the quiet of an early Sunday morning, when the world seems to lay asleep a while longer. But it was a Wednesday. The quarantine had taken hold.

This instrumental piece of music came to mind as a result. It borrows from two sources: harmonically, it derives inspiration from composer Morten Lauridsen’s choral piece “Dirait-on”. The piano figure derives from Pink Floyd (particularly ‘Us and Them') and Tony Banks, and incorporates a typically unorthodox Thijs Van Leer-type of turnaround.

The middle section is an atmospheric pad for guitar, bass pedals and choir. The bridge to the coda is from the very first piece of music I wrote, back in 1977, and it all wraps up with some typical prog-rock bombast.

The wonderful filigree and solo guitar work throughout is contributed by my good friend and musical associate, Ron Rutherford.
