about

I occasionally indulge my love for the Hammond-and-piano sound of certain bands I loved in the late 60s/early 70s, Procol Harum being the most notable among them. Last year, I wrote something in the same moody, atmospheric sort of style as would be found on an old Procol Harum album, like ‘A Salty Dog’ or perhaps ‘Grand Hotel’. This track is the result.

The opening string figure morphed from a simple ascending line into quoting the chordal climax from the Adagio movement of Samuel Barber's String Quartet Opus 11 (the ‘Adagio for Strings’). Although rooted in F, I changed the last chord to provide a more logical transition to the G minor opening chord of the song.

Written for my friend and colleague (and fellow PH fan) Ron Rutherford, it is re-dedicated to Gary Brooker of Procol Harum, with love.

lyrics

Cast away, I’m a cork afloat
Left to fend in a leaky boat
Wave on wave, whitecap and wind
My company, the albatross, the circling fin

Clouds of silk in a brilliant sky
Choking salt in a tortured sigh
None but this eternal sea
My bane and buoy, my melody

A distant isle
A verdant lea
A raincloud crowning its peak

This fickle swell
Denying me
The rescue I seek

I watch it pass
In slow parade
To rest beyond the horizon

My hope denied
This endless ride
Becomes a pallet to die on
