about

'January Sky' is a moody instrumental I wrote as a guitar showpiece for a colleague and friend, Vlad Hendryx. It's a bit of an 'homage' to early Steve Hackett and Jan Akkerman, I guess. Northwestern winters are a sometimes overwhelming mix of grayness, rain, snow, and frequently, a brilliant, crisp sunset to balance it out. I try to depict that 'grayness' in the somewhat astringent harmony of the main melody, which is balanced with the more consonant nature of the solo sections.
