“Fifteen” is a much-fretted-over piece of music that uses as a subject the stark memories of my first sexual encounters as a teen. The opening section is in minor and diminished chords, reflecting my state of mind at the time, basically that of a shy, awkward, music-infatuated teenager, a boy curious (and endlessly confused about) the mystery of girls. The middle section changes into a dancelike tempo, representing my utter amazement that my own curiosity was equally reflected by the girl to whom I was attracted. The last section restates the first section, but returns in briefly in a major key, before settling back into minor and diminished chords, indicative of the fact that I’d felt I’d grown up, but I wasn’t exactly sure just how.
This is a piece performed with my good friend and musical colleague, Ron Rutherford. Ron substituted an eminently muscular drum track in the solo section for my weakened 7/4 drivel, and coalesced my introductory chords into something playable. The 12-string guitar throughout is lovingly and sensitively performed by him, as well.
