about

I began this piece on Memorial Day, 2020. As the pandemic commenced and the world began shutting down, I thought of the final resting places of American servicemen and servicewomen all over the world: Who would visit them ? Who would leave flowers, and remember ? Who would maintain their gravesites ? A favorite piece of mine has always been Charles Ives’ Second Symphony, particularly the Adagio Cantabile movement, which I find especially moving.

So, I began this piece in the same manner, borrowing the I-IV chord sequence opening that movement, and improvising/developing a short, reflective, albeit asymmetrical chorale passage from there. The piece is scored for a brass octet, i.e. two trumpets, two French Horns, trombone, bass trombone, and two baritone horns. The full title is “Eventide at Colleville-sur-Mer", and it's intentionally brief, at only two minutes.
