about

I’ve always been a fan of ‘epic’ rock music, the type that told a story, no matter how fanciful. Songs such as Kansas’ “Song for America” and Jack Bruce/Mountain’s “Theme for an Imaginary Western”, about the Western migration of settlers across the American West in the 1800s, appealed to me. So, I indulged myself in writing my own. The song is in a stately 6/8, and although there are no vocals in this, the voice melody is carried by the synth strings. Lyrics are included below.

I am indebted to my musical colleagues for their contributions: Ron Rutherford, for his beautiful 12-string filigree and rhythm work, and to Vlad Hendrix for bringing the spirits of Leslie West and Alan Holdsworth to life in his guitar solos. You can blame the rest of the instrumental performances on me.

lyrics

“The star-crossed and lovelost
The ragged romantic and ne’er do well
Bound together, lace and leather
A wave across the wild ocean tempest
Their one comfort a dream, fervent and fed

Far horizon, pure and brightened
A limitless opportunity
But all knelt, humbled in fear of coffin, and cross

Autumn and sadness
Winter and madness

With April came warm rain
The perfumed and carpeted prairie
The soft nights, under starlight
By June we'd crested the eagle's aerie
By midsummer we sang ‘Hail, Columbia’

(Forest-clad mountains
Waterfall fountains)

Snowy treeline, ragged coastline
The marten and wild cedar heartland
‘Ocean sighted’ !’, terns alighted,
The waves cloaked in fog and in foam
For this heaven we trade one hell for the next”
