This piece is part of an extended-form, ‘rock-opera’ type of work, that I’ve more or less relegated to the round file, but this part I felt deserved a second look. The subject is the experiences of the soul (in this case, a female soldier of indeterminate nationality) after meeting her bodily demise in combat. (I admit it has a spiritual aspect to it. Richard Strauss, a favorite composer of mine, played with this concept in his “Tod und Verlkarung” tone poem, and I thought, ‘well, if he can tackle it, so can I…”)
This particular section depicts the protagonist, in ‘face to face’ encounter with her Creator, and her prayer as her soul is weighed in final disposition. I wanted it to be sparse - the voice (theremin) depicting the fear, utter subjugation and awe felt by the soul, and the synth pads representing altogether the space, the mystery, and the loneliness surrounding that encounter, and where the soul is naked before that which created it. So, this section represents a void, a spacious atmosphere, an encounter….and one voice. There are words to the soprano line, which you can pretty easily place against the theremin melody.
